Writers and their Writing: J.K. Rowling

Writers and their Writing

Somehow Harry Potter flew under the radar for me until College.  I remember seeing the first one for sale in a store when I was a kid. I even remember all the hoopla when the movies released.  I think the real reason I didn’t latch on was I didn’t know anyone geeking out about them until I got to School and met my Gateway friend.  Anyone that loves Harry Potter has that Gateway friend who convinces you how great the Story of Harry Potter is and gets you hooked.  That friend for me was Sarah.  After a summer of reading all the way through book 6 (it released 2 weeks after I finished the 5th book), we talked about it and compared the movies.  So much so, our friend Ashley decided to give it a go and is now a fellow Potterhead.  These are the only books I’ve read by Rowling, but I have her other ones on the TBR list.

Rowling isn’t just a favorite Author because of the Potter books, though.  It’s because she is just a remarkable and intelligent person.  One of my favorite speeches of all time is one she gave at a Harvard commencement, which you can watch here.  Also, her life story of not giving up and accepting her life, but always fighting for her dreams is an inspiration.   If you’ve never looked into Rowling further than the author of Harry Potter, you should.  She is an amazing woman who also happens to be an author.
