Wonderful Words

Wonderful Words is when I talk about the words I’ve been interacting with lately:

So I’ve had a couple moments this month where I got very repetitive with my writing and need a couple replacement words.  Thank goodness for the Thesaurus.  Here’s some of the swaps I made:

Thesaurus:

constantly -> unceasingly

power -> transformation

released -> liberated

Dictionary:

I had some conversations about Feminism, both how it started and what it is now, and wondered how the dictionary defined it.

Feministadvocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men.

I also had a conversation with one of the volunteers I work with who is also finishing up her time as an Elementary School teacher.  We talked about how some people avoid using big words with kids, but using them and explaining them is what helps kids increase their vocabulary.  One of the first “big” words I remember learning was jocular.  My dad was teasing me about being so Jocular, which I asked what it meant and learned it means humorous.  I then proceeded to use jocular till it was no longer jocular.  But it’s a reason explanation is one of the most important parts of the learning process.

So what about you?  What words have made you take notice this month?  What is the first memory you have of learning a “big” word?
