Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart

Girl Waits with Gun

Goodreads Summery

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

Where I found it

This one came through on the Goodreads September Newsletter

Why I Added It

First of all there’s the cover.  It makes me think it’s going to be like Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, not to mention the description makes it sound that way too.  It seems to be a 1920’s mystery thriller from the description and I’ve been wanting to branch out of the YA genera for a while.

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling

Goodreads  |  Amazon

Why Not Me?

Goodreads Summery

In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you.

Where I found it

My sister told me about it first I think, then the goodreads newsletter reminded me to add it.

Why I Added It

I love how fun and quirky Mindy is.  Plus I love that she’s a strong single woman who is happy with her life.

A Curious Tale of the In-Between

A Curious Tale of the In-Between (Pram, #1)

Goodreads Summery

Pram Bellamy is special–she can talk to ghosts. She doesn’t have too many friends amongst the living, but that’s all right. She has her books, she has her aunts, and she has her best friend, the ghostly Felix.

Then Pram meets Clarence, a boy from school who has also lost a parent and is looking for answers. Together they arrive at the door of the mysterious Lady Savant, who promises to help. But this spiritualist knows the true nature of Pram’s power, and what she has planned is more terrifying than any ghost.

Where I found it

So many book bloggers have been reviewing this one, I can’t even remember where I saw it first.  But The Pretty Good Gatsby is the reason I added it to my TBR.

Why I Added It

Well the cover is just sooooo good.  Pretty and eerie all at the same time.  And Gatsby’s review was raving.  I kind of want to quite some of my other books and skip to it.  But I’m trying to be good about reading what I already own.

A Whole New World (A Twisted Tale #1)

Goodreads Summery

Welcome to a new YA series that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. Each book asks the question: What if one key moment from a familiar Disney film was changed? This dark and daring version ofAladdin twists the original story with the question: What if Jafar was the first one to summon the Genie?

When Jafar steals the Genie’s lamp, he uses his first two wishes to become sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Agrabah lives in fear, waiting for his third and final wish.To stop the power-mad ruler, Aladdin and the deposed Princess Jasmine must unite the people of Agrabah in rebellion. But soon their fight for freedom threatens to tear the kingdom apart in a costly civil war.

What happens next? A Street Rat becomes a leader. A princess becomes a revolutionary. And readers will never look at the story of Aladdin in the same way again.

Where I found it

I saw this one come through on two blogs but Pandora’s books is the one that made me stick this on my list.

Why I Added It

I haven’t seen too many books retell the story of Aladdin.  And even with mixed reviews leaning toward disappointing, it’s still intriguing enough I want to give it a try.

Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older

Shadowshaper

Goodreads Summery

Sierra Santiago was looking forward to a fun summer of making art, hanging out with her friends, and skating around Brooklyn. But then a weird zombie guy crashes the first party of the season. Sierra’s near-comatose abuelo begins to say “No importa” over and over. And when the graffiti murals in Bed-Stuy start to weep…. Well, something stranger than the usual New York mayhem is going on.

Sierra soon discovers a supernatural order called the Shadowshapers, who connect with spirits via paintings, music, and stories. Her grandfather once shared the order’s secrets with an anthropologist, Dr. Jonathan Wick, who turned the Caribbean magic to his own foul ends. Now Wick wants to become the ultimate Shadowshaper by killing all the others, one by one. With the help of her friends and the hot graffiti artist Robbie, Sierra must dodge Wick’s supernatural creations, harness her own Shadowshaping abilities, and save her family’s past, present, and future.

Where I found it

I’ve been binge listening to BookRiot podcasts and I feel like every episode they talk about this one.

Why I Added It

It sounds so different and interesting, especially for an urban fantasy.  Plus they rave about how good it is on BookRiot.  This is another one I kind of want to rush out and buy.
