I think a big part of the abundant life journey is knowing where it is you want to go. It’s very easy to continual just say “I wish I had that life.” Without ever really saying what it is about that life you want. What’s worse, is there’s always a new person to follow, or like, or pin, and before long you just wind up going in circles with no clear vision and retreat because “you can’t figure out this life thing.”
I like to think of my 20s as more of a doodle than a spiral or circle. I definitely made progress to a better future, but it wasn’t always a straight focused line. I wish I would have gotten clarity sooner, but I also don’t know if I would be in this seat writing these words with the life I have if I hadn’t taken a doodle path. Maybe you feel a little like this, or maybe you want to make sure you don’t take quite so “swirly” of a path but rather get as close to a straight line as you can manage.
Step 1
So it’s about taking baby steps toward your future and not just sitting at the bus stop waiting for a quick ride to the end. So the first thing you need to do is figure out where you want to be when it’s all said and done. When you are 90 years old, what do you want to remember accomplishing so you can say, “It’s been a pretty good run.”
If you want help figuring that out, get my free Legacy and Bucket List workbook. It will ask you some questions and help you write down what you want out of life.
Step 2
Step two is setting goals to make that future happen. Goals can be short or long term, but they should be something that you can say, I accomplished this.
So for example. This coming year I want to get better at yoga, but that’s not my goal. Getting better at yoga could be a 3-week process or a three-year process and is relative based on my mood for that day. Rather, I want to set a goal that I can achieve a certain position, or have a certain ability to say I did what I set out to do. For me, I think I want to be able to do a headstand and splits. I’ve never been able to do either of them and I feel like it’s a doable challenge.
But by setting this a goal, you can say yes I made it or no I didn’t and you can set smaller goals and to-dos in order to make that happen. And that’s how you baby step on your journey.
So Download the workbook, or if you’re more visible, make a vision board either physical or digital and figure out what life you’re going to set out to create.
For extra fun, I made this easy print poster. It’s free when you sign-up for my newsletter, just like the Legacy and Bucket list workbook, and it will help you stay focused for 2021.
