On the whole, I try to live a life of no regrets, and on the whole, I think I’ve accomplished that. So I wouldn’t say I regret not doing these things, but I think I would be a whole lot further along in life if I had.
1. Taken my writing more seriously
I have never been good at spelling and grammar, but I’ve always loved telling stories and writing. I just didn’t think I could be successful at writing because I wasn’t good at English. It wasn’t until I was on my own that I realized I could still be a writer as long as I had a good editor.
2. Focused on one or two hobbies, instead of everything Hobby Lobby has to offer
I am a jack of all trades at heart. It’s in part because I love to learn new things and keep being challenged. But on some level, I wish I had honed in on just a couple interests and mastered them sooner. It would have saved me money too.
3. Developed my leadership
One thing no one really told me about my career is how you have no choice but to be a leader if you want to be successful. If I had realized that what I was signing up for was leadership and not “just” a job, I think I would be further along.
This isn’t a definitive list. There are some other things I could put here, and will probably talk about at some point, but I also know I didn’t fail in my 20’s just because I’m not where I would like to be in these areas. They part that always has to be taken into account when you’re reflecting and wishing you had done something different, is how much different would it make you as a person. If you improved yourself more in one area, you probablly would have sacrificed in another area, and who knows how much that would have changed you. It may have meant eliminating realtionships, exeriences, or other learnings.
Don’t forget when you look back and wish for something different, you may not have gotten to this moment where you’re willing to work for a better future. But now that you’re here, it’s important to set goals so that when you look back ten years from now, you’re not wishing you had worked on the same things or wishing you done things differently.
But the best way to keep that regret from happening is to set some goals. When you look back on your life in 10 years. What do you hope to say is accomplished? It might change, and that’s why you do check-ins, but set some goals of what’s important. Put them someplace you’ll see them often: your mirror, computer desktop, over your desk, etc. But make sure these are the things you want to accomplish, not the things other people want for you. This is the best way to live with no regret.
